Maurice Gardner Composition Competition
The American Viola Society announces the first biennial Maurice Gardner Composition Competition. Compositions should be unpublished, a maximum of 15 minutes in length and must be for solo viola or viola and piano or electronic media. Submission deadline is November 1, 2009. An application fee of $25 (Check or Money Order only, payable to American Viola Society) to help cover expenses must be included with the submission of scores and CDs.
Three copies of scores and CDs are required for adjudication purposes. The committee’s preference is for live performance rather than MIDI realization on the CDs if at all possible. Any interactive media required for the performance of the winning composition will be the responsibility of the composer. Adjudication will be anonymous so scores should be submitted without the composer’s name visible. A separate sheet with the composer’s name, address, phone, and email should be included with the submission.
Submit Compact Discs only (no tapes), along with corresponding scores to Michael Palumbo, Weber State University, 1905 University Circle, Ogden Utah, 84408-1905. Composers must include self-addressed, stamped return envelopes if they would like their materials returned. Materials submitted without a SASE will be destroyed six months after the decision deadline.
The composer of the winning composition will be notified February 1, 2010, and the composition sent to a violist who will premiere it at the 38th International Viola Congress, which will be held at the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 16-20, 2010.
Travel and Housing: The composer of the winning composition will be provided with housing at the Congress, travel reimbursement up to $500.00, and a pass to attend all sessions of the Congress.
Age Limit: None
A prize of $2,000 will be awarded to the winning composer.
Questions should be addressed to Michael Palumbo, mpalumbo@weber.edu or 801-626-6991
“Tokyo International Viola Competition” in 2009
The Tokyo International Viola Competition will be the first international competition in Japan exclusive for viola.
The competition will be held every three years as part of Viola Space, an annually held viola festival that started in 1992 through the initiative of internationally distinguished violist Nobuko Imai, with a mission to “celebrating the charms of viola, introducing outstanding works and new works for viola, and promoting young artists”.
