Book Review: A Rebecca Clarke Reader

Before examining the Rebecca Clarke Reader itself, it might prove
useful to place the Anglo-American composer, Rebecca Clarke (1886-
1979), in historical perspective. She is a relatively new phenomenon
in the viola world as it exists in 2006 and as such it sometimes
is difficult for us to imagine that she was a contemporary of our
grandparents and great-grandparents. She was six years of age when
Johannes Brahms died (1892) and was already a mature woman of
32-33 in 1919 when she entered her viola sonata in the Coolidge
Competition.

JAVS welcomes submission of high quality original manuscripts on topics related to the viola, its performance, pedagogy, history, and literature.

Article length should not exceed 3,500 words.

Submissions must be new, previously unpublished material.

Articles may be submitted at any time. Submissions should be sent by email as an attachment formatted in Microsoft Word, or pasted into the body of an email, to: info@AVSnationaloffice.com

Music examples created in Finale should be submitted electronically, or if created in an another music software program, saved as JPeg files.

Audio files may be included and should be saved in .mp3 format. The author is responsible for securing permission for including/reproducing any copyrighted material. Please include proof of permission along with submission.

Photos and artwork are encouraged to enhance the article. Please send as JPeg files via email, or mail to the AVS National Office (attn: Matthew Dane, JAVS Online Editor, 14070 Proton Rd. Suite 100 Dallas, TX 75244). Please do not mail originals.
