SUMMARY:AVS Shared Recital: Portrait de femme
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nPerformer:\nDiane Phoenix-Neal\nSherry Grant\nThis collaborative recital includes works by female composers of the 20th and 21st centuries from five different countries around the world: New Zealand\, Taiwan\, United States\, Venezuela and Australia\, including one world premiere. Three of the composers\, Chihchun Chi-sun Lee 李志純 \, Jessie Montgomery\, and Johanna Selleck are living composers. This program invokes cultural traditions such as dance\, songs and poetry and is curated in the form of a multimedia presentation\, where portraits of each composer and matching poems with English translation are woven into the music. The Madrigal second movement and dance-like third movement of the Sonata para viola y piano by Modesta Bor provide an opening poetic duo\, followed by Rhapsody No. 2 for solo viola by Jessie Montgomery. This work was transcribed from the violin version by the composer herself. New Zealand composer Dorothea Franchi’s unique Andante for viola and piano is an unknown gem. Chihchun Chi-sun Lee’s Multi-Cultural Songs\, originally for mid-range voice and piano\, “incorporates folk tunes from Korea\, Russia\, Japan\, China and Indonesia. This music travels from country to country within a seamless path regardless of the language.”  The program concludes with a world premiere of Wondrous! by Australian composer Johanna Selleck for viola and piano about the wonder of nature. The entire program takes the audience on a global journey\, promoting a message of unity and intercultural partnerships.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

These three selections represent distinct stages in this evolution. \nSonata No. 1 in D major\, Op. 12\, No. 1 (1798) is a youthful and sunny work. It reflects Beethoven’s grounding in the Classical tradition of Haydn and Mozart. The sonata’s graceful melodies and balanced structure are a testament to his early mastery\, a conversation between the viola and piano\, full of wit and joy. \nThe “Spring” Sonata No. 5 in F major\, Op. 24 (1801) is one of Beethoven’s most beloved works\, a masterpiece of early Romanticism\, showcasing a richer\, more expressive range while retaining classical clarity. The nickname “Spring” perfectly captures its lyrical\, pastoral character. It’s a true partnership where both instruments have equal importance\, sharing in the beautiful\, flowing themes. \nSonata No. 9 in A major\, Op. 47\, the “Kreutzer” Sonata (1803)\, is a work of immense power and scale. This sonata was famously described by Tolstoy as a work of “terrible passion.” The sheer virtuosity demanded from both performers is immense\, and its dramatic intensity and heroic scope foreshadow Beethoven’s later\, revolutionary works.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Originally written for solo violin\, Cohen writes in his performance notes that this piece offers a “musically engaging experience” by developing technique while playing in a more “up-to-date style of string playing.” It also makes an exciting encore piece to end a recital program. \n*** \n“Novel Voices” by Fernando Arroyo Lascurain was written for Molly Carr and Anna Petrova (Carr-Petrova Duo) in 2019\, inspired by their trips to refugee camps as part of their Novel Voices Refugee Aid Project. This work for viola and piano is a shining example of contemporary viola writing – full of emotional depth and technical virtuosity. “Novel Voices” brings together stories of refugees from around the world in a thought-provoking three movement work. I believe the poignant message of this piece deserves to be showcased and shared in the viola community.  \n*** \nIn Leslie Adams’ “L’extase d’Amour”\, the overwhelming feeling of love is explored through heartfelt melodic content adamantly and repeatedly restated alongside soaring harmonic content that grows and blooms in pivotal moments in the work\, creating a feeling of effortless expanse of emotion. The players are constantly in dialogue with each other\, listening and responding as the texture evolves around the constant of the primary theme. \n*** \nNikolai Kapustin’s much wordier sonata showcases a similar exploration\, but through Kapustin’s signature jazz-based vocabulary. While the overall tone of the sonata is vibrant and lighthearted\, the frequent call for technical virtuosity from both players is indicative of a philosophical search for expressive freedom by overcoming physical limitation. Emotional release is achieved through the resulting freedom of expressive ability\, and shown through the sheer volume of different musical characters.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Costa Rican composer Fernando Zúñiga Chanto captures this duality through contrasting musical ideas: moments of lyrical calm give way to tense\, unpredictable rhythms and harmonic darkness. The piece unfolds like a tale told at dusk\, balancing folklore and modern expression with dramatic intensity.\n \nThree American Folk Hymn Settings by Kenji Bunch (b. 1973) is a ten-minute duo for two violas divided into three movements played without pause. After an opening Prologue\, Bunch uses three hymns as melodic material for fiddling Americana in the second and third movements: “What Wondrous Love is This\,” “In Lonely Mountain Ways\,” and “I Come with Joy.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Lyrical and dramatic\, this work is an important addition to the voice and Viola repertoire and celebrates American writers. \n*** \nStephen Nordstrom showcases a pair of contemporary duets by composer Dominic Dousa. The versatility of the viola as a duet partner is shown across interwoven musical dialogues with the clarinet and piano. Energetic and ebullient\, Spring Forth in Joy echoes some of the varied dimensions of joyous contentment\, from a sense of sparkling delight in simple pleasures to a calmer\, more thoughtful reflection on the true\, good\, and beautiful. Mountain Song is inspired by the majestic 14\,000-foot peaks of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Throughout the work\, a beautifully lush theme is juxtaposed with more passionate and spirited themes\, which paints for the listener a vivid tapestry of brilliant sunshine and crisp air across a snow-covered landscape. \n*** \nThe viola duo set explores the relationship throughout history between viola and the human voice. Containing original arrangements and transcriptions of works by Dowland\, Dvorak\, and a world premiere by Bahar Royaee\, we will show the evolution of the viola’s voice through several lenses: song that occurs in the viola’s repertoire\, lyricism from the eye of a violist composer\, and the combination of voice and viola by performers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
