Lynne Mackey, pianist, has performed in solo and chamber music settings in the United States, Europe and Africa. Some highlights of her career include performances at Weill Recital Hall and Merkin Hall in New York City, the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, and the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In Virginia, she has toured extensively as an artist with the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
Awarded fellowships and residencies, she spent 5 months in Paris in a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts. In addition to solo piano performances and a piano project involving music of Olivier Messiaen, she studied and played 17th and 18th century harpsichords in the Musée de la musique, the Musée des Beaux Arts, and in private collections. Ms. Mackey was the first performing artist to be awarded an Appalachian College Association Fellowship, for a one-year residency at the University of Virginia in the field of contemporary music. She has given lecture recitals in many venues, including the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities, and the MTNA National Conference. In addition to holding a Doctorate degree from the Eastman School of Music, she holds a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.
Winner of both the William C. Byrd and the Grand Rapids Symphony concerto competitions, she has appeared as guest soloist with the Grand Rapids and Flint Symphonies in Michigan, and with several orchestras in Virginia, including the Lynchburg Symphony. She has also performed as harpsichord concerto soloist with the Presbyterian College Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina.
Lynne also performs in the Duo Gee-Mackey (cello and piano). The Duo was formed in 2004 and has performed in Europe, Africa and the United States. Their tour of Spain in March of 2019 included concerts in the Museu Pau Casals in Sant Salvador, the Conservatorio de Música in Granada, and a variety of venues along the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia. Their most recent tour to Paris in October of 2021 included a performance in the concert series Les Musicaux dimanche George V. Upcoming tours include a return to Spain in the Fall of 2025.
As a harpsichordist, Lynne is Director of the Virginia Baroque Academy, in its 14th year as part of the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival. Lynne has performed chamber music, two-harpsichord concerts in Blacksburg and Floyd, VA, two-harpsichord concertos with chamber ensemble in the Noon Concert Series at the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, and as concerto soloist in Clinton, SC, mentioned above.
Lynne is coordinator of the MTNA Young Artist Competition in Virginia. Also a frequent adjudicator, recent activities include James Madison University Concerto Competition, James Bland Competition, Hungarian Music Competition (WMTA), Renaissance Music Academy Concerto Competition, NVMTA Achievement Awards and others.
Lynne has taught on the faculty of several colleges and universities as Associate Professor, including Eastern Mennonite University, the University of Mary Washington, the University of Virginia, and Bluefield College, where she also held the position of Music Department Chair. She was most recently a guest visiting lecturer for one semester in the School of Music at James Madison University in the Graduate program, and currently teaches at Mary Baldwin University.
