2026 AVS Festival Mass Ensemble

Join the 2026 American Viola Society Festival Mass Ensemble for the WORLD PREMIERE of Moonlit Flight, an extraordinary new viola ensemble work by Kevin Day, composed especially for the 2026 AVS Festival.

This will be a truly memorable collaborative experience—bringing together violists of all ages, backgrounds, and levels to premiere a brand-new work written specifically for our community. We hope you’ll be part of this special musical moment.

Participants are invited to self-select their preferred part by reviewing the full score below, or you may choose to let us place you where the ensemble most needs support. Once you submit the signup form, you will receive your bowed part.

To help ensure a rewarding rehearsal experience, please arrive with your part as prepared as possible before our first rehearsal on Thursday, June 4 at 8:00 AM in the Forbes Center Concert Hall. A MIDI recording is also provided below so you can explore the piece in advance and hear how the ensemble comes together.

The four parts are thoughtfully balanced, each offering unique musical opportunities:

  • Viola 1 – The most technically advanced part, including some treble clef and higher-position playing
  • Viola 2 – Similar musical material while remaining in lower positions
  • Violas 3 & 4 – Rich rhythmic energy, compelling melodic lines, and plenty of resonance—especially for those who enjoy the power of the C string in Viola 4

If you are a beginner or younger violist, we encourage you to select the part that best matches your comfort and experience level.

We can’t wait to share this premiere with you and hear Moonlit Flight come to life together.
