Jorge Alves

Jorge Alves, professor at the Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espetáculo – Porto, is acclaimed for his artistry as violist and educator. A founding member of the Matosinhos String Quartet, he has performed widely across Portugal and internationally, collaborating with leading musicians and premiering contemporary works. The Quartet was distinguished as Rising Stars by the European Concert Hall Organization. His career spans performances in Europe, Brazil, Russia, Thailand, and China, both as soloist and chamber musician. He has won first prizes in viola and chamber music at the PJM-RTP National Competition (Portugal) and the Santa Cecilia International Music Festival (Italy). Trained in Portugal, he continued his studies with Tibor Varga in Sion and Bruno Giuranna in Cremona, supported by the Gulbenkian Foundation. Founder and president of the Portuguese Viola Association, he also serves as vice president of ESTA International. A dedicated teacher, he regularly gives masterclasses across Europe and beyond.
