Announcing the 2026 David Dalton Viola Research Competition
Students and early-career researchers: submit your work to the 2026 David Dalton Viola Research Competition! This prestigious annual competition recognizes original scholarship that advances the art, history, literature, and pedagogy of the viola.
Winning entries receive:
- Cash prizes (up to $1,000)
- Publication in the Journal of the American Viola Society
- score bundles
- and the opportunity to present research at an upcoming American Viola Society Festival or other AVS-sponsored events as an AVS Emerging Scholar.

Submission Deadline: Monday, June 1, 2026 at 11:59 PM EST
This competition is open to current AVS members enrolled in a university or recent graduates within 12 months of degree completion. We warmly encourage emerging scholars to apply and share research that will shape the future of the viola community.
