The 2024 AVS Festival Competitions Committee announces the 2024 AVS Festival Competitions! The venue for this year’s festival, held in tandem with the 2024 Primrose International Viola Competition, presents a rare opportunity for our live round participants and ensemble performers to experience the highest levels of viola artistry – and witness history in the making! This year’s competitions also feature increased prizes to support young artists as they prepare for the next stages of their viola journeys. Please review the guidelines for each competition and spread the word to students, colleagues and friends! Applications are due December 15, 2023. The submission portal, via Acceptd, will open on October 1.

The AVS Festival Competitions consist of seven separate competitions:
AVS Solo Competitions (Junior, Senior, and Collegiate divisions)
AVS Orchestral Audition Competition and Seminar (for pre-professional violists)
AVS Ensemble Invitational Competition (Junior, Senior, and Collegiate divisions)
Prizes include:
AVS Solo Competitions
Collegiate Solo Competition (for students age 19 – 25 on June 1, 2024):
First prize – $2,000
Second prize – $1,500
Third prize – $1,000
Senior Solo Competition (for students age 15-18 on June 1, 2024):
First prize – $1,500
Second prize – $1000
Third prize – $500
Junior Solo Competition (for students age 14 and under on June 1, 2024):
First prize – $1000
Second prize – $750
Third prize – $500
Solo competition finalists may also be invited to perform for festival masterclasses.
Orchestral Audition Competition and Seminar (for students under the age of 29 on June 1, 2024):
First Prize – $2,000 cash prize + a one-hour lesson with a member of the audition panel
Second Prize – $1,500 cash prize + an in-person 30-minute consultation with a member of the audition panel
Third Prize – 1,000 cash prize + an in-person 30-minute consultation with a member of the audition panel
AVS Ensemble Invitational (three divisions, based on age and enrollment status):
Three ensembles in each division will be invited to give a featured performant at the 2024 AVS Festival. Invited groups will also participate in the Festival Mass Ensemble premiere of a work by Melia Watras, and will give the premiere of a new work composed by Michael Kimber especially for this year’s invited ensembles.
