Luca Trombetta, violist and educator, is a native of Catania, Italy, and studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, later continuing his studies with Bruno Giuranna in Lugano and Simonide Braconi in Biella. He earned his D.M.A. from James Madison University after relocating to the U.S. in 2010.
Dr. Trombetta has performed internationally under conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Yuri Temirkanov, Ennio Morricone, and Nicola Piovani, and collaborated with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Andrea Bocelli, and Uto Ughi. He is the principal viola of Opera on the James, violist of The Liya String Quartet, and a member of Roanoke Baroque.
A prizewinner in national and international competitions, he was awarded the 2011 Corrochano Scholarship for String Quartet and performed Berlioz’s Harold en Italie with LUSO in 2024. Dr. Trombetta serves as Coordinator of String Studies and Professor of Viola at Liberty University’s School of Music.
