Pain-Free Double-Stops
This workshop will explore methods for finding both reliable intonation and comfort in double-stop playing using the principles of the Till Approach for String Players. Developed by violinist Sophie Till, this system of string technique harnesses the innate brilliance of our everyday movement patterns in service of the instrument and the repertoire, giving players a set of tools for meeting their musical goals in ways that harmonize with the body’s design. At the core of the Till approach to double stops is a tool called the Interval Matrix, which organizes intervals by their physical signature in the body (different finger combinations) and promotes maximum ease and stability by allowing the forearm to support the playing fingers equally.
In this workshop aimed at violists, we’ll discuss how the Interval Matrix and understanding how the hand and arm function as a unit can help us open the hand without stretching, avoid strain in large intervals and achieve consistent intonation. In addition, we’ll see how thinking intervallically can actually improve our agility and efficiency in single-note playing.
