As a nonprofit arts organization, the American Viola Society relies on the expertise and energy of a working, all-volunteer board composed of players, teachers, and viola lovers. On July 1, 2026, we welcome new AVS Board members and congratulate continuing members on new three-year appointments:

Tony Devroye – President-Elect
Lucina Horner Cosby – Board Member (newly elected)
Mark Holloway – Board Member (newly elected)
Gabrielle Padilla Molina – Board Member (re-elected to a second term)
Rose Wollman – Board Member (re-elected to a second term)
Not pictured: Ames Asbell, who concludes a three-year term as President and begins a one-year term as Past President.
We especially welcome newly elected members of the board, Lucina Horner Cosby and Mark Holloway.
Lucina Horner Cosby started playing the violin at age 9 and switched to the viola about 7 years later. She studied privately at the 92nd Street Y in New York City and attended the LaGuardia High School of Music and the Arts (the “Fame” School). At The Juilliard School of Music, she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree after which she studied with Mr. Robert Vernon (Principal Violist with the Cleveland Orchestra) at the Cleveland Institute of Music. During that time, she also participated in the Christmas Seminar with the late Alexander Schneider and the Cleveland Chamber Music Seminar. In 1985, Lucina joined the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra for one year and in 1986 she won another audition, this time for the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra where she was in the viola section and after a few years, the Assistant Principal Violist as well as Acting Associate Principal Violist. Lucina was a member of the Phoenix Symphony for 10 years and then spent two years with the Colorado Symphony in Denver. She is currently a member of the Alabama Symphony since 1998 and teaches both viola and violin as well as chamber music. Other accomplishments include extensive substituting in the viola section of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra including for two international tours. Lucina’s summer activities include playing with the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming as well as leading hikes.
Violist Mark Holloway is a chamber musician sought after in the United States and abroad. He is a member of the Grammy-winning Pacifica Quartet and professor at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington. He has played at prestigious festivals such as Marlboro, Music@Menlo, Ravinia, Caramoor, Banff, Taos, Angel Fire, Mainly Mozart, and the Boston Chamber Music Society, and as an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Performances have taken him to far-flung places such as Chile and Greenland, and he has played regularly at festivals in France, Musikdorf Ernen in Switzerland, and at the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove, England. He was a frequent guest with the NY Philharmonic, Orpheus, and the Metropolitan Opera orchestras, principal violist at Tanglewood and of the NY String Orchestra, and has played as a guest with the Boston Symphony and guest principal of the American and Riverside Symphonies, Philadelphia and St. Paul Chamber Orchestras, American Ballet Theatre, and Camerata Bern. He has performed at the Casals Festival, Bargemusic, 92nd Street Y, Israeli Chamber Project, Chameleon Arts Ensemble, NOVUS NY, and on radio and television throughout the world, including Live from Lincoln Center. Hailed as an “outstanding violist” by American Record Guide, he recorded for the Cedille, Marlboro, Naxos, CMS, Music@Menlo, and Albany labels. Mr. Holloway earned his B.M. summa cum laude from Boston University, where he studied with Michelle LaCourse, and his Diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music, as a student of Michael Tree.
